The Darr Garden 2013 Begins

The Darr Garden 2013 has officially started!

Sunday I woke up to gorgeous sunny skies and chirping birds.  I took this as a sign to start planing my seeds for the garden.  I probably should have started some of the seeds earlier; however, I didn't want to keep anything in the house so I needed it to be warm enough to have the seedlings in the green house. Of course Monday morning there was frost all over the grass (we haven't had frost for probably 2 months) so I'm hoping that I didn't kill anything.

There are so many things I would love to grow if only I had more space.  One of my dreams would be to have raspberries and blueberries but I need a lot more space to have them.

Here is what I planted so far:
  • Sugar Pumpkins
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Purple Kohlrabi
  • Snow Peas
  • Green Beans
  • Purple Beans
  • Tomatoes
  • White Onions
  • Green Onions
I probably will be supplementing my seedlings with some more mature plants once they start showing up at Carpinitos.  One thing that I tried this year is to create my own planting pots. I have a ton of newspapers around and used a waterbottle to form the pot. I then scrunched up the bottom and filled them with soil. The best thing about these is that I can simply plant the entire pot and the newspaper will just disintegrate into the soil.

There will be pictures later; but tiny pots of dirt are kinda boring so I'll wait until there is some green.

Are you planting a garden this year? What are you going to be growing?

  2. Oooooo... could you possibly post a tutorial on how you made the newspaper planting pots? I would love to see that!
I can't even start thinking about my garden this year yet... Not with an impending 6-8 inches of snow heading our way by tonight. Blech. Bring on spring! I am over the snow already!!

  3. YAY! We still need to till the garden space so we can plant (our tiller just crapped out). We hope to get the cold-weather stuff in there before the end of the month, but considering we had a freeze last night, I'm in no hurry. We're growing carrots, pak choi, brussel sprouts, beets, garlic, green onions, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, sugar snap peas....and some flowers. :)
Best of luck with your goodies!!
