Geocaching

Today in the Seattle Times there is an article about how Geocaching is becoming a tourist destination.  There are 5 cities that currently have geocache tours, and an estimated 1.8 million caches hidden world wide (6500 are in Seattle alone). The Seattle Times article can be found here.  I haven't gone on a geocache in quite some time, but I think Brad and I might need to hunt our brains for the username/password we used and head out to go again!

For those of you who haven't heard of geocaching, my favorite description is "using milti-million dollar satellites to find Tupperware in the woods".  Brad and I used to go geocaching all the time, we started in 2004 doing caches with good enough clues we could find them without a GPS. In mid 2004 I bought a cheap GPS that we used to find tougher caches (I think the GPS is still somewhere around the house).

The GPS of 2004 is a lot different than the one you have in your car. The GPS showed us what direction to go and how far we were from it.  There were no turn-by-turn directions nor a pretty picture of what our destination looked like.

Brad and I spent many evenings and weekends hunting for little boxes hidden around the Seattle/Bellevue area.  I remember one we did was to actually find a webcam hidden at Pike Place.  The webcam ended up being right by the fish mongers and as they were throwing around the fish they took out a "fish" and threw it at me.  I screamed and jumped back; however, it turned out to just be a pillow shaped like a fish, and Brad still hasn't let me live it down. My favorite goecaches were probably the fake ones that Brad created to ask me to prom and to propose. :)

Have any of you gone geocaching? If so, what was the favorite cache you ever found?  If you want more information on geocaching, head to geocaching.com!

  2. I can't believe you geo cache!! The best one I have ever done was near my dad's house in a national park...it was a giant treasure chest hidden in a cave! It was also my first one- definitely a good initiation!
