I’ve added a few more plants since the last update. The top bed now as 4 additional tomato plants;
I’m hoping that they give me lots of tomatoes for some yummy salsa. I transplanted some broccoli, but I think
that I tried too soon and killed them already; at least it is early in the
season and I can just plant some more seeds.
My radish seeds took off like wildflowers and I’m trying to
figure out where I’m going to put all of them.
I transplanted a few into separate containers but I need to take the
time and put a majority into the flower beds.
The watermelon isn’t dead, but they don’t look incredibly
happy either. I did buy this plant on a
whim so if it doesn’t work out, I will take it as a lesson learned and know to
grow something else next year.
I haven’t 100% decided how I’m going to use all my herbs, I
want to re-locate them so that they are easier to access, but still get watered
by the sprinklers. The one herb that I
am having issues with is basil, when I told this to my neighbor her response
was “isn’t it a weed?” so I feel like I’m doing something wrong. Fred Meyer had some gorgeous giant basil
plants yesterday for $2.99 so I bought one in hopes of keeping this one
alive.
There are definitely some things that I’m going to do
differently next year. For starters, I’m
going to plan the garden better and know where each vegetable is going and also
figure out what can share beds easier.
We have 3 zucchini plants in their own “half-bed” and I probably could
put something like radishes in there with them since the radishes grow
underground and the zucchinis are on the vines.
Our fig tree is doing stupendous this year. I can’t believe how much it seems to have grown
this past year. It is probably about 7-8 feet tall; being only 5'4", anything over 6 feet is just "tall". I’m starting to see
little fig buds on the branches and looking forward to seeing what all I can do
with them this year. Last year I made
some fig jam, Brad thinks that the fig jam itself is a bit boring, so I’m
thinking that I might add some strawberries to it. Fortunately the strawberries are doing great
as well so it looks like I could easily do strawberry-fig jam.
Hope everybody is enjoying this lovely spring weather! What have all of you been up to take advantage of the sunshine?
Oohh it looks good!! This post made me realize that I haven't said anything about my garden!! Better get on that!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how I feel about figs (can't remember eating them) but I do LOVE fig trees and I always look at them longingly at the nurserys!! How exciting that yours is doing so well. Did you two put it in or was it already there? If you did put it in, where did you get it, how long ago and how big was it when you got it? Lots a q's sorry bout that! -- It might be fun to try and make your own version of Fig Newtons!!

The fig tree was already here when we moved in; the previous owners did some landscaping to sell so it wouldn't surprise me if it had been put in right before the house was put on the market. I have no idea where to buy one, I would check out Carpinito Brothers in Kent, they might have more information about how to buy a good one (whenever I have a question I always go down there for answers).
DeleteSpeaking of Fig Newtons, did you hear that they are changing the name to just "Netwons" because they think that calling out the fig part is turning away sales.
hmmm how interesting? I didn't know they were going to change the name...funny.
DeleteThat is nice that the previous owners put it in that is great! Yeah I tried growing one a couple of years ago but I think it was in the wrong place it was really small so it didn't really work. I feel encouraged to try again though....I should probably buy a few fig fruits to try to first make sure its something I would find useful.
