The Garden is Growing

Today was GORGEOUS so the dogs and I spent some time in the backyard (I have a sunburn to prove it).  I am exited with how much my stuff is growing; some of the strawberries are already turning red! I have a ton of radishes and the onions seem to be on their way.  I harvested my first bit of lettuce today to add to my dinner.

I have added a couple more plants to the top bed and put some newspaper down in attempt to keep the horsetail weeds away.  I'm thinking that next year I will lay a bunch of newspaper down and then put some new topsoil over it.  Currently all of the ceramic pots are being used to hold the newspaper down, and I would like to relocate them to the deck so that they have easier access to the kitchen.

I also noticed later in the day that I have a flower budding on the zucchini plant.  Hopefully there are some more flowers in the next few days.

Yesterday evening I was at Home Depot and discovered this amazing deck pot.  It has been contoured so that it hangs over the deck railing perfectly.  There are two separate sizes to the contour so that it can be used on multiple deck railings.  I bought a few herbs to put in the planter: Moroccan Mint, Lemon Verbena, Chocolate Mint and Stevia.

Stay tuned later this weekend for a few projects that I've been working on for the house.  It involves lots and lots of spray paint! :)  What have you all been up to at the start of this long weekend?  Any big house projects planned?

  1. Your garden is looking great! One word of caution about the stevia plant... my dad did research for me because I was curious if it was safe to use from the scientific point of view (sometimes the natural health fads can have wildly untrue claims). So he read a bunch of the scientific studies and found that it's best to not eat the plant directly (for example dried and steeped for tea) because it showed varying toxicities in studies with animals. However, you can use the processed stevia extracts sold in stores. I don't know what you're planning on doing with the plant, but just thought I would pass on the info. Having a scientist for a dad is handy :)
