Yesterday I was able to pick the first strawberries of the season! I also picked some red-leaf lettuce to eat on my sandwich; but I'm mostly excited by the strawberries. When I went out to check on things today, I noticed that there were a bunch more that had turned partially red overnight and will probably be ready tomorrow or Saturday.
These strawberries are now gone (and they were quite delicious)! I'm looking forward to eating the other things in my garden this summer. While investigating the other plants I saw more blooms on the zucchini as well as some bell peppers starting to form. The tomato plants have some flowers, but no fruit forming yet.
Again, my Basil doesn't look to happy, I might just have to give up and realize that I can't keep Basil alive. The mint plants that I put on my deck a couple weeks ago are still doing great and will be ready for some lovely mojito's this summer!
I'm already thinking of next year's garden, I will probably do a lot of similar things. One thing I will change is that I probably won't do spinach again, Each plant really only produced 4-5 leaves so it takes a lot of area to make a good salad out of it. I'm hoping that I can utilize my little green house more and start the majority of plants from seeds. I might still buy my tomato plants as starts since they are such high maintenance.
This year I've enjoyed my garden a lot more than past years. In the past, I've enjoyed the shopping for plants and making the garden bed look all pretty....for the first week or so until the weeds come. This season, I have been caring for my beds by clearing out the weeds and transplanting some plants when they need more room to grow. Hopefully all this care will lead to lots of fresh vegetables this summer and fall!
