Garden Saga Update

The past three weekends have been GORGEOUS here in Seattle, I’ve used this nice weather to get my garden going a little further.  I decided that some of my seedlings were killed by Pixel so I planted new seeds into some pots and hope these live.  Last year, Brad purchased a rototiller attachment for his power head (I don’t know how to quite explain what he has, but the one part is the motor similar to a weed-whacker, and then there are different attachments that plug into the same power source.  There were 3 beds which were getting new plants so after I weeded them, Brad dug them up and then laid some new topsoil.

A second attempt at growing some seedlings, the spoons are marking what is in the pot

If anybody knows how to kill horsetail weeds please let me know.  They are a pain and survive anything we throw at them.  Currently we are trying out 20% Vinegar (normal store bought is 5%).

Fun hanging basket from Target

Here is the current list of what is growing:
  • Bell Peppers
  • Rhubarb
  • Strawberries
  • Zucchini
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • White Onions
  • Green Onions
  • Carrots
  • Tomatoes
  • Radishes
  • Luffa Gourd
  • Watermelon (yeah, this was an impulse buy down at Carpinito Brothers, hopefully they turn out)
  • Potatoes (these haven’t been planted yet, but we got a fun barrel thing to try out)
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Fennel
  • Cilantro
  • Lavender
  • Sage

I considered doing pickling cucumbers instead of zucchini, but Carpinito Brothers has such a nice selection come pickling time that I figured I would leave that up to them.

Already dreaming of Straberry Rhubarb Pie

My strawberry plants have exploded with blossoms recently.  Within about a week they went from 1 flower total to each plant having 4-5 blossoms (there are already more than what is in this picture).  I’m excited to watch these flowers turn into delicious sweet wonderfulness.

An almost blank slate in the first garden bed
As you can see, the top garden bed doesn’t have much in it.  I’m leaving it open so that I can relocate items out of the pots once they sprout and also to have some extra space for if I decide that I want extra of a particular vegetable there is a spot to put them.

I’m also collecting wine corks to make cute garden markers so if any of you have some extra wine corks laying around that you don’t want I will gladly take them off your hands.

Next step is pray for more sunshine!  It’s currently dumping rain as I write this so I know that they will be well watered for a few more days.

  1. I LOVE Carpinito! It's also 30 seconds from where I work, so it's maddening to drive past it constantly and want to stop but know I shouldn't.
